Construction begins on Molonglo River Bridge

Jointly funded by the Australian and ACT governments, the $225 million project will provide a critical missing link for the arterial road network.

The bridge, spanning over 200 metres, will be one of the longest weathering steel bridges in Australia and marks a significant step forward for the Australian bridge construction industry.

The project will connect the northern suburbs of Molonglo, including Whitlam, to the rest of the valley and 1.7 kilometres of new arterial roads will facilitate smoother travel.

Sam Tindal, BMD Constructions’ Project Manager said the project was much more than concrete and steel with it set to create opportunities.

“BMD is known for our collaborative approach to contracting and having operated in the Australian Capital Territory for over 15 years, we have earned a strong reputation for our engagement of the community and our established supply chain to leave an enduring legacy,” Mr Tindal said.

“The first stage of construction involves enabling works and the realignment of the northern approach road to Coppins Crossing, safeguarding smooth access for construction vehicles and machinery to the bridge location."

The bridge and road approaches are expected to open to traffic by the end of 2025.
