BMD Constructions extends work on Tonkin Highway with new Alliance win

Tonkin extension alliance
BMD Constructions, as part of the Tonkin Extension Alliance, is hitting the accelerator to deliver the next stage of one of Western Australia’s most significant road infrastructure projects.

The $1 billion Tonkin Highway Extension and Thomas Road Upgrade Project will see the major upgrade of the south-eastern corridor of Perth, delivering a 14-kilometre extension of Tonkin Highway as well as major upgrades to Thomas Road.

The Alliance comprising of BMD Constructions, Georgiou Group, Civcon Civil & Project Management, BG&E and GHD will work in partnership with Main Roads Western Australia to deliver the project, creating approximately 4,400 jobs and boosting the local economy.

BMD is proud to return for the next phase after successfully delivering the award-winning Tonkin Gap Project in 2024. Completed as part of the Tonkin Gap Alliance, the project had a key role in Main Roads Western Australia’s efforts to improve the state’s road network by addressing a major bottleneck, reducing travel times and enhancing safety.

The Tonkin Highway extension will feature a four-lane dual carriageway from Thomas Road to South Western Highway, with several grade-separated interchanges, underpasses, and roundabouts. To improve community functionality and usability, the upgrade will also include equine underpasses and a new principal shared path along the 14-kilometre extension.

Easing traffic pressure on local roads, the works will improve safety for the communities in Byford, Armadale, Kelmscott, and Gosnells, with less heavy vehicles travelling through the areas.

The Thomas Road upgrades will see the duplication of 4.5 kilometres between Kargotich Road and South Western Highway; add a new shared path; and improve intersections at Kardan Boulevard, Masters Road, and Plaistowe Boulevard. Construction is set to begin in mid-2025 and finish by late-2028.
