BMD delivers cash injection for Rockhampton businesses
Established over 40 years ago, BMD has a philosophy of supporting the communities in which they operate, evidenced through the delivery of the civil construction contract which is providing 600 jobs and economic stimulus to regional Queensland during a time when it is needed most.
BMD Group Executive Director – Operations Scott Power said the project team is committed to developing long-term relationships with Rockhampton based subcontractors and owner operators.
“We’re proud to have been able to invest $20 million into 12 local Rockhampton businesses through subcontracts awarded on the Carmichael Rail Network,” Mr Power said.
“With around 12 months of construction to go, there is plenty of opportunity for more local businesses to get involved in the project’s delivery and I would urge companies to register via our dedicated email address, 141-4236 subcontractors@bmd.com.au.”
BMD Group Board Chairman and Managing Director Mick Power AM said the delivery of the Carmichael Rail Network further cements BMD’s place as a regional Queensland construction contractor.
“We have a long-term commitment to regional Queensland, illustrated by more than 25 years of operation and the delivery of around $1.5 billion in infrastructure over the past decade,” Mr Power said.
“Community is important to us and without projects like the Carmichael Rail Network, we couldn’t continue to provide the level of support that we currently do,” he said.
TRM Fencing owner Rob Thallon said involvement in the Carmichael Rail Network project has generated considerable growth for his business.
“The last six months have been incredibly busy for TRM Fencing and being involved in a project of Carmichael Rail Network’s scale has allowed us to grow our business and employ more crews based in regional Queensland communities such as Moura, Tambo and Julia Creek,” Mr Thallon said.
“Working with BMD has also exposed TRM Fencing to the management systems of a large organisation which will provide us with the skillset to subcontract to projects of a similar size in the future,” he said.
Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry said she is pleased to see local businesses in Rockhampton receive approximately $20 million in contracts as part of BMD’s section of the Carmichael Rail Network.
“The commitment shown to our local Rocky businesses is also an investment in the region as we move into a post-COVID economy.”
“I am very passionate and vocal about local businesses getting the opportunity to undertake large-scale projects and I’m glad to see 12 businesses reaping the benefits."
“The resources industry has been especially resilient in a very challenging time and they have been responsible for continuing to employ Central Queenslanders during the coronavirus pandemic."
“Everyone knew the coronavirus would send shockwaves through the Australian economy, but it would have been so much worse if not for the contribution of our resources industry,” Ms Landry said.
Adani Mining CEO David Boshoff said Adani was working closely with all of its contractors to help connect them with regional Queensland workers and businesses to provide opportunities on the project.
“BMD is a proud Queensland company and we’re thrilled to see they have already awarded $20 million to local subcontractors, providing economic stimulus at a time it is needed most,” Mr Boshoff said.
“We have always said that Rockhampton and Townsville are our primary hubs for employment and we’re delivering on that commitment with our Rockhampton travel hub now established and our Business Centre providing a base for our contractors and subcontractors.”
BMD’s Carmichael Rail Network contract includes the delivery of earthworks, drainage, bridges and associated road upgrades.
