About the project

Originally built in 1880, the existing Kapooka Bridge, located near Wagga Wagga, was a traffic blind spot.

BMD Constructions was engaged to undertake the realignment of the Olympic Highway, including a new road bridge over rail, construction of 3 kilometres of Greenfields Highway, and a new interchange to the Blamey Barracks.

Outcomes

BMD delivered an innovative and effective option to build a new bridge north of the existing bridge and realign the highway to the east in this regional area of New South Wales.

BMD implemented a program that incorporated several important milestones which contributed to construction efficiency and risk mitigation, ultimately contributing to an on time and on budget delivery.

As the realignment was one of the largest road projects in recent history in the Wagga Wagga area, BMD engaged local and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander subcontractors, creating jobs and stimulating the economy.

With the realigned highway now open, the project achieved its objective of improving road safety, improving freight efficiency and reducing travel times along this stretch of road which previously had a history of crashes.
