BMD delivers new bridge over the Ellen Brook in Australia’s west
The project involved the construction of a new 29.6 metre, single-span tee-roff bridge, 2.4 kilometres of approach roads and drainage works. The bridge features a pedestrian and cycling path on the bridge, separated from road traffic.
With a highly skilled team and a solid record in delivering bridge connections across Western Australia, BMD successfully overcame the technical challenges of building the structure. Four 75 tonne precast beams were landed over the live waterway using a 500 tonne crane.
Throughout construction, the project team was focused on BMD’s Zero Harm goal, with a strong health, safety, environmental and quality culture established onsite. The project was delivered with zero lost time injuries over 26,300 hours and nil environmental incidents.
With the bridge being constructed in an environmentally sensitive area, BMD was committed to making improvements to the site. As part of BMD’s environment month, the project team cleaned up the area removing waste from the unofficial dumping ground. Waste included large items such as fridges, washers, cars and mattresses. This left a positive legacy for the community and contributed to achieving BMD’s campaign theme of ‘it all adds up’.
BMD established a close working relationship with the client to achieve best for project outcomes, including the awarding of additional scope with the ultimate value being in excess of $6 million. The project was partly funded by the Australian Government through the Building Better Regions Fund Program.
The project has been handed over to Council for final works to be delivered before opening to traffic. The local community is soon to benefit, with the bridge providing an essential link to facilitate growth in the region, delivering better access to surrounding roads and suburbs.
