First major subcontract package anchored on Darwin Ship Lift project
The Darwin-based entity is set to play a pivotal role in the project, with the $16.9 million contract involving the supply and delivery of approximately 430,000 tonnes of rock essential for laying the groundwork ahead of construction.
Located in the East Arm precinct, the upcoming site works signify a transformative period, laying the foundation for the facility designed to meet the needs of the general fishing and maritime sector, the Department of Defence, and the Australian Border Force.
At 26 metres wide, 103 metres long and six metres deep, the ship lift boasts the capability to lift a 5500 tonnes, enough to facilitate vessels such as the new fleet of offshore patrol vessels procured by the Australian Defence Force.
Since the project was awarded to Clough BMD JV in September 2023, the project team have been focused on local procurement and employment, working with the Territory Government to provide opportunities for Territorians to be involved in this significant project.
A number of milestones have been reached since the beginning of the year, including environmental and project development approvals, finalisation of the key design elements, the completion of locating utilities and underground services on site, the design of temporary works for construction, and the procurement of the additional sub-contract packages.
Over the next few months, additional works packages such as further quarry supply, site surveying, site facilities and plant equipment and hires, are expected to be awarded.
The project is expected to be completed and fully operational by 2025 and will deliver long-term benefits in the region’s economic growth through the creation of hundreds of local jobs within the maritime support sector.
