About the project

BMD’s work in the wastewater sector saw the delivery of our first brownfield full process design and construct sewerage treatment upgrade project, the Ravenshoe Sewerage Treatment Plant. The upgrade works incorporated the use of some existing infrastructure and the integration of new infrastructure to provide a budget cost, while successfully delivering the required water treatment process to comply with the negotiated draft licence and future proof the plant for the growing Queensland region.

Scope

Earthworks

Construction of a new access road

Construction of an intermittently decanted extended aeration (IDEA) tank

Installation of all underground pipework

Refurbishment of the inlet works structures and primary settlement tank

Procurement and installation of wastewater treatment and all associated equipment

Erection of all structures, platforms and walkways

Installation of fencing

Installation, testing and commissioning of the new plant

Provision of operator training

12 months process operational support

Outcomes

The bioreactor, chlorine contact tank and aerobic digesters were all incorporated into one concrete tank. This allowed for a reduced project footprint and existing infrastructure to be repurposed as part of the upgrade works, reducing overall costs for the client. The plant was designed to be monitored and accessed remotely, resulting in no requirement for anticipated operations or maintenance activities within confined spaces or hazardous gas areas. The project was successfully completed during the wet season, with all infrastructure designed to sit above flood water levels to ensure the ongoing operations of the plant could continue. Despite high rainfall events, the project team met all performance requirements and was delivered on time, with the upgraded plant’s capacity now able to cater for the growing region.
