Spirit of Tasmania - Corio Quay

About the project

BMD Constructions was engaged by GeelongPort to deliver the Civil and Infrastructure - Landslide Works to accommodate the relocation of the Spirit of Tasmania (SoT) from Port Melbourne to Corio Quay in North Geelong.

The new passenger and freight terminal precinct, now known as the Spirit of Tasmania terminal, was developed following a need for additional capacity to accommodate the growing number of passengers travelling on the SoT after the vessel outgrew its original home. The terminal provides an enhanced experience for passengers with easy access, ample parking for passenger vehicles, state-of-the art technology to enable seamless boarding and security processes, and comfortable passenger lounge with a café and children’s play area.

Scope of works

Design and construction of a new incoming high-voltage substation, internal HV reticulation to service the terminal building, hydraulic loading ramps and future vessels, and site-wide LV reticulation with over 5 kilometres of electrical conduiting

30,000 tonnes of asphalt and 115,000 tonnes of crushed rock laid for the internal road network, marshalling area and carparks

Design and construction of drainage pipes, water quality improvement devices, portable and recycled water, and fire and sewerage services

Upgrade of Corio Quay Road to deliver the rehabilitation of the distressed road, two new intersections into the facility, one of which signalised, new lanes, shoulder widening and upgrade of street furniture

Construction of four satellite support buildings comprising of a security building, a two-story Stevedore’s building, an after-hours amenity building, and four small ticket booths with boom gates and canopy

Site-wide civil infrastructure with over 600 metres of retaining walls, kerb and channel, line marking, footpaths, security fencing, automated and manual gates, turnstiles, handrails, shelters over electrical equipment, and more than 800 metres of concrete leg slabs for trailer unhitching and storage.

Outcomes

BMD successfully delivered the project two days before practical completion, generated significant cost savings to GeelongPort under a collaborative contracting model

A site-wide traffic management plan was implemented to enable safe, efficient travel for principals, contractors, subcontractors and site visitors

The initial design of the stormwater discharge was challenged to maintain the standards of the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning’s (DEWLP) legal point of discharge requirements without impacting the length of the project

BMD challenged the preliminary design’s use of stormwater quality improvement devices (SQIDs) to ensure it was acceptable under the best practice environmental management guidelines for urban stormwater.
