About the project

The project involved undertaking selective maintenance and repairs to the stacker embankment formation, to permit SK702 to continue operation without unscheduled downtime. Originally constructed in 2007 and located at FMG’s Herb Elliott port facility, stacker embankment SK702 comprises two single rails (mono-rails) on each embankment which are approximately 2000 metres in length, allowing for a single stacker and reclaimer to blend and stockpile iron ore prior to ship loading.

Scope

Removal and replacement of contaminated ballast

Realigning of stacker and reclaimer mono-rail

Construction of new drainage to limit future contamination

Construction of a temporary haul road alongside stockpile and embankment

Unbolting of tie-rod from rail and cutting tie-rods

Removing all rail and sleepers

Excavation of ballast

Shaping of sub-ballast capping

Installation of clean screened ballast to bottom of sleeper

Reinstallation of sleepers

Reinstallation of rail, re-clip, weld and grind

Construction of an upstream concrete spillage slab

Reshaping of road from edge of conveyor to new concrete spillage slab

Outcomes

BMD worked efficiently to establish the site, incorporating detailed planning to ensure the project commenced on time. This included careful logistics and transport for the required resources on the project with the team working proactively with the client to manage the project of works and ensure adequate scheduling of resources within the roster. The result was a flexible system which enabled all or some staff to allow for changes in the works and critical path activities to continue.

The project team identified opportunities to utilise both local suppliers for equipment requirements as well as employing operators for equipment as required, on a case by case basis aligned with the program of works to ensure operations were able to be maintained.
