BMD turns a new page on church’s story
BMD donated the church to Iona College and relocated the building from its original Bay Terrace location in March 2023. The complex process involved detailed planning and execution to maintain the building's structural and historical integrity.
Urbex, a BMD Group company, partnered with Iona Collage on the restoration project, carefully preserving the church's architectural charm while incorporating modern amenities. These upgrades include a new timber deck with an accessible ramp; back door access to accommodate larger groups; kitchenette and accessible toilet (PWD) allowing for small functions; and new connections for water, electricity, sewer, and communications.
The church’s original leadlight windows were also carefully refurbished to maintain their historical beauty. These intricate renovations ensure that the windows remain a highlight of the church’s design, blending history with function.
For over a century, the church has stood as a symbol of faith and culture in the Wynnum community. In collaboration with the Kelk and Sibley families and local Quandamooka Elders, BMD has ensured that the church's legacy continues at its new home.
The old church is now positioned on Iona Hill, overlooking the Bomparin Wetlands, and has been renamed Lindum-mere, meaning "Lindum by the Water." Ready to host a wide range of functions, the church is primed for a future filled with everything from musical rehearsals to community events and student-led initiatives.
BMD CEO and Iona College alumnus Scott Power expressed his pride in the project.
“BMD’s history in the Wynnum Manly community runs deep, with the business founded in the suburb in 1979," Mr Power said.
"We are a values-driven business, and supporting our local community is ingrained in everything we do.
“We embraced the opportunity to preserve this important piece of community heritage.
"The transformation of the Wynnum Baptist Church into Lindum-mere creates a new home to serve the arts community whilst retaining its rich heritage."
Iona College Principal and CEO Trevor Goodwin said the installation of Lindum-mere was another connection point between the College and the local community it serves.
“This has been an enormous project, and equally one of enormous significance for our community,” Mr Goodwin said.
“Seeing this important part of our local area’s history restored to its former glory to be enjoyed by future generations at its new home at Iona is a source of pride for our College.
We are so grateful for our long-term friendship and partnership with BMD and the Power family - who share Iona’s passion and commitment to our local community - for their dedication and generosity in bringing the ambitious project to life.”
The completion of the Church renovation at Iona College marks a key milestone in the BMD Group’s return to Wynnum. Australia’s leading privately-owned civil contractor is set to build its global headquarters in the heart of the bayside suburb in the Church’s former location on Bay Terrace.
BMD’s support for the Wynnum-Manly community includes contributions to local sporting clubs, cultural events, and community development projects, with BMD involved in projects that improve infrastructure and promote sustainable growth in the region.
