This International Women’s Day, BMD is focused on one of the most significant challenges facing the construction industry today: gender inequality.

With 21% of BMD’s 2300 employees being women (7% greater than the civil construction industry average), we’re proud of our progress and anticipated next steps.

BMD is committed to ensuring our female representation continues to sit above industry standard, boldly embracing the 2025 theme of Accelerate Action, with a commitment to real change in improving gender diversity within our business.

In a leap forward in cementing our commitment, BMD has focused efforts on the implementation of a Gender Equality Action Plan, with a strategy to foster a diverse, inclusive, and supportive workplace by increasing female participation, ensuring equitable career development, and promoting non-traditional career pathways for women.

BMD Group Director People and Process Dare Power said embracing gender equity as a business means providing, equal opportunities and actively seeking out and backing initiatives that support women in construction and engineering.

“As we move forward in our mission to build a stronger, more inclusive future, it is imperative that we address gender inequality in the construction sector,” Mr Power said.

“The industry has long been male dominated, but we have an opportunity to champion change, inspire young women into non-traditional careers and lead the way in fostering a culture of equality, respect, and opportunity for all.

“A fundamental challenge we face as an industry and as a business is that in the cohort of women studying engineering and trades is not reflective of our society. We’re making some important strides to build partnerships and programs with schools and universities and taking active steps in levelling the playing field when important decisions are being made.

“Our partnerships continue beyond early entrants, where we invest in women’s sporting teams in alignment of a shared vision and objective to raise the profile and improve participation of women in the underrepresented industries of sport and construction.

“Diversity is fundamental to our culture and the way we work together as a team. We are committed to fostering a more inclusive, equitable and safe workplace - because we know that’s how we can power futures and create enduring legacies for years to come.”

BMD’s Gender Equality Action Plan puts in place clear and actionable steps to ensure our workplace is diverse, inclusive, and supportive of all employees - so we can even the playing field.
