About the project

We’ve built a home amongst the gum trees for the koalas at Cleland Wildlife Park in South Australia for the Department of Environment and Water.

The Koala Loft Redevelopment is a cutting-edge facility, further enhancing the park's reputation for best practices in conservation and animal welfare.

Project scope

Indoor koala pens to provide year-round care

Refrigerated storage and preparation areas for koala care needs

Dedicated experience and photography rooms for capturing moments with visitors

Design elements tailored to the environment, including a 60-metre timber sleeper wall and feature timber battens adorning each structural column

Internal fit out of the existing gift shop and cafe areas, featuring a modern front counter, new shelving system, redesigned entry and exit, and expanded, refreshed dining spaces

Outcomes

The team prioritised environmental protection during construction, as the site is within a national park. All earthworks and building activities were completed without impacting native flora, fauna, or park visitors. The project logged approximately 13,000 work hours with no injuries.

Located deep in the Adelaide Hills, the site posed challenges for large vehicle access and deliveries. Wet weather and limited roads added to the complexity. Despite this, BMD worked closely with the wildlife park and specialised subcontractors to complete the project on time and within budget.
